SENEGAL

Water and Garden Project

Situation on Site

Although northern Senegal is quite developed, there are many small, isolated and very poor villages where people live at survival level, most of them being cattle herders who are depending on a good rainy season to make it through the very hot dry season. Healthy food like vegetables are rare or not affordable.
According to the WFP (world food program), about 40% of the country’s population lives in poverty and 75% of them are employed by the agricultural and fishing sector. Also 50% of them are children. Despite good access to primary school, many children will not continue after the primary level because of untrained staff, challenging school environments and resource shortages. People have little hope for a better future or to come out of poverty.

Goals & Focus

The objectives of our local partner organisation ADENN (Association de Development Ndiyam Nguurdam) include:

  • Promoting access to clean water, education and health.
  • Supporting the creation and development of viable income generating activities.
  • Promoting good governance and project management capacity made locally by village communities.

Activities

ADENN has put in place several compassion and development programs in order to meet the needs of small and isolated villages.

  • The community development program (CDP) implements:
    • literacy training
    • nutrition and health education
    • community gardens
  • Water projects to provide drinking water and help women improve hygiene and irrigate gardens are also made. These projects include well drillings and the installation of a suitable pump.
  • To help small farmers, ADENN manufactures locally and affordable hand pumps and drip irrigation kits.

Current Status & Results

Up to 2021, following projects have been realized (with help of other NGOs):

  • 5 community development projects (content see above)
  • 28 water drillings, including the installation of a pump of different types
  • 12 gardens with a drip irrigation system
